12 Years A Slave

For this Monday after the Academy Awards, I've chosen the Best Picture winner to write about.

"12 Years a Slave"

Now, the story of 12 Years a Slave is that Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery. He then has to fight to gain his freedom back.
Now, I admit this movie is gonna be a little hard for me to write about because a) I have a bit of a hard time concentrating on movies with a serious and mature theme, so b) I kinda fell asleep in the middle of the movie. It's horrible, I know. Especially at a movie like this. But it was 2 hours and around 30 minutes long, and heavy so I guess these things happen. But enough about that. What I did get out of this movie was a story about a man who got one of the worst case scenario for a free African American man - he lost his freedom. It was very hard to watch as he went from a man happy with his life and happy with his family, and got lured into a false promise by two (hella shitty) men, who then betrayed him.

I can't really say much more about it, because what I saw of it was well made and great acting and yeah, overall good movie. Just a little heavy and serious for me. This is not a movie you watch to be entertained, you watch it to be somewhat educated and enlightened.
Do I think it deserved the Best Picture award? Yes and no. Yes, because it is an important story and movie, but no because I really just liked Gravity and Her better. But I don't know, maybe this was just the year for movies of a serious note.
